Queensland population changes

Friday's release of Australian demographic statistics by the ABS shows some intersting population changes in Queensland.

The December quarter of 2013 (the most recent data) marked the first time in three years that interstate migration dropped below the natural increase as the biggest contributor to the population increase.

This is in contrast to Austraila as a whole, where overseas migration was still a bigger contributor, althoug there was a national decline as well.

A comparison of the states shows that overseas migration has dropped across the board, although Queensland's decline has been the greatest.

As for intestate migration, Queensland remains a popular state to move to, with a slight increase in the last quarter of last year. New South Wales remains an unpopular spot for intestate movement, with more people leaving than entering in the past five years at least. Perhaps this will pick up now that they've finally won a State of Origin series.
