Offshore processing

Two hits in two days to a resonable approach to aslym seekers.

Yesterday the Australian Labor Party caucus voted down a motion by Melissa Parke to end its support of offshore processing. Ms Parke has written about the issue here for the Guardian.

Today the High Court ruled that detention of asylum seekers on Manus Island is not unconstitutional.

I have no opinion on the court ruling - it is a legal matter. The Labor caucus decision, on the other hand, is extremeley disappointing, and will further fuel the angst among Labor members, the majority of whom want a more reasonable approach from their party.

  1. New Matilda has a piece by a member of the Young Labor Left, who says that the group has committed not to give any campaign support to Labor candidates unless they publicly oppose mandatory detention and offshore processing. This includes doorknocking, letterbox dropping and calling voters. Interesting approach. I don't know how much impact such a boycott would actually have on campaign efforts.
